Group therapy can be an excellent addition to individual therapy – and it can be a wonderful treatment alternative on its own as well.

Positive features of group therapy can include:

  • Feeling accepted
  • Gaining a sense of belonging
  • Knowing you are not alone; others have had similar experiences
  • Giving and receiving support
  • Practicing new behaviors/ways of communicating in a safe place (sometimes referred to as ‘social laboratory’)

Groups can be open-ended in nature, have set number of sessions, be process-oriented and conversational, or be educational.
